ATHLETIC SPORTS.

GOLF. The October monthly medal competition of the Dunedin Golf Club took place on the club's links on Saturday, the 19th. The showery weather left the greens in perfect order, though doubtless "it prevented 6 larger attendance. A pleasant match resulted as follows (scores not exceeding net) i R. D. Smith 94 - 8 = 86 T.Brydone 11l - 18 = 93 E. S. Paterson ... 103 - 9 = 94 D. Campbell 100 - 5 = 95 G. Armstrong 97 Scratch 97 « M. Smith 94 + 4 = 98 * J. M. Laing 118 -18 =IOO

The summer championship of the c'.ub (by holes) commences on the 26th.

CYCLING.

The annual meeting of the New Zealand Union was held at Christchurch last night. Pahiatua, Hokitika, and Whiratera (Invercargill) Cycling Clubs had been affiliated, making a total of eleven affiliated clubs. The distances of the union championships were decided. It is probable that the championships will be decided at Palmerston North. The Executive recommended that arrangements be made to hold a carnival to celebrate Zimmerman's visit. Messrs Burston and T. O. Hunter concluded their bicycle tour of New ZeaLmd yesterday at Invercargill, and left for Tasmania today. Since leaving Auckland they have travelled 2,000 miles, visitiog the Hot Likes, Taupo, Napier, Wellington district, West Coast of this island, and the Otago lakes. They were stuck up by floods in an attempt to reach Te Anau, and report that the country up there is under water.

LAWN TENNIS. The annual meeting of the Otago Lwh Tennis Association was held last night.. The report showed that the clubs affiliated to the Association are the Otago, Balclutha, Milton, University, ex-High School, Kaituna, and Port Chalmers. The Carisbrook Club is for the present in abeyance but, on the other hand, the Palmerston Club has stated its desire to affiliate. An effort was made to induce the Lawrence Club to again join the Association, but nothing definite came of the correspondence. This is to be regretted, say the Committee, for the Association could have played more than*one match with this club during the past season. Many of the country fixtures fell through owing to inclement weather. Indeed, the whole of the important fixtures of the Association were somewhat marred by wet weather, and this entirely acoounts for the debit balance, fortunately a- small one, shown in the balance-sheet.—The following officers were elected i—President, Dr F, 0. B&tohelorj vice-president*, Mr J. T. Markerrag and the president of the Port Chalmers Club (Mr John Mill); CommitteeMessrs R. C. Teonent, J. L. Salmond, A. F. Ledger, H. 0. Fenton, J. S. Hislop, and E. C. Crawshaw } auditor, A. Hogg; referee, W. A. Sim j secretary and treasurer, J. M'K. Henry. Considerable discussion took plaoe respecting the proposed constitution of the New Zealand Association, and it was decided to leave the matter in the hands of the new officers.
