South Dunedin.—This Council met last night; present—The Major (Mr Wardrop), Crs Shftoklook, Thomas, Holley, Osborne, and M'Key.—A letter from the chairman of the Otago and Southland Underwriters' Association stated that the Association would consider the representation of the Council that under the new tariff of insurance no deduction had been made for suburban boroughs the streets of which w?re reticulated with a water supply and had an efficient brigade.—The South Dunedin Fire Brigade wrote that they were agreeable to 11n resolutions passed by the Council with regard to working, but wished to call attention to tho injustice done by the strict enforcement of the resolution that the brigade room should be reserved exclusively for the use of members ot the brigade. This would deter the brigade from snowing visiting firemen over their quarters The Council resolved to reply that tho resolution was not intended to apply to members of visiting brigades. Pout Chalmeks.—The meeting of this Council was attended yesterday evening by the Mayor (Mr J. Watson, jun.) and Crs "Watson, sen., Allen, Fail, Weir, Hendry, Inverarity, M'lnnis, Murray, Thomson, Pcdlow, Wilson, and Sutton. —Tho chairman of the Fire Underwriters' Association, Dunedin, wrote acknowledging receipt of the Council's letter, and in reply slating that it is not in accordance with the policy of the Association to contribute to tbc maintenance of fire brigades, and, further, to point out, in view of any future action the: Council may be contemplating with regard tothe fire brigade, that the rates at present i applicable to Port Chalmers were based on the facts of the Council having an efficient water supply and a fire brigade'. The Mayor said that to his knowledge there was a special tariff for Port Chalmers and Qamaru, which was next to that of Dunedin, and much lower than some other plaoes. Cr Fail taid that property owners would now understand that notwithstanding tho large increase in the premiums it was the .duty of the Counoil to maintain the Fire Brigade—Mr J. A. Millar, M.H.E. for the district, wrote informing the Council that the Minister of Bail ways would pay the £25 as soon as the work in connection with the Mussel Bay dram was completed.— The Finance Committee's report showed -the debit to be £604 5s 9d.—The Works Committee reported that the asphalt path in Meridian street had been finished, the drain pipe leading to the George street sewer cleaned out, and the fencing on the zigzag leading to the baths repaired. Baths Committee recommended the appointment of Mr David Burt as custodian for the ensuing season.—On the motion of the Mayor, it was resolved that temporary repairs be effected at the top of Grey street at a cost not exceeding 30s. —On the subject of the water supply to shipping, Cr Weir (the chairman of the Water Committee) having spoken as to the revised tariff, Cr Allen said he thought it would be advisable to adopt the revised tariff for either six or twelve months, and that something should be done'to increase the revenue from the water supply, which had decreased year by year. The loss, if any, could, not ba great. Cr Mubbay moved the adoption of the'revised tariff—viz., for tanks up to 25 tons 3s, 251»;55 tons 2s 9d, 35 to 60 tons 2s 6d, 53 to 75 tons; 2s 3d, 75 to 150 2s, over 150 tons Is 9d j for noilflrs up to 35 tons 2s 6d, 35 tons and upwards 2&V— , The revised tariff was adopted, to come intotp/op on the 22nd init. |.
