The amount of revenue collected at the Custom-house on goods cleared to-day for consumption was £2,173 3s 2d.
A SUCCESSFUL CONCERN.
The Port Chalmers Working Men’s Co-operative Society, Limited, have just completed their first year of operations. In addition to supplying the members with stores at low prices (in all cases for cash) the company have returned as bonuses on purchases the sum of 10 per cent, to members and 5 per cent, to non-members, This is evidently the result of active and prudent management. The balance-sheet and a letter from one of the founders appear in this issue.
GRAIN AND PRODUCE MARKETS. Messrs Donald Reid and Co. report that prices ruled as under at their auction sale to-day:— Oats. —Values almost on a par with those of last week. Long Tartarian and black. Is lOd to Is lid; prime milling, Is 8d to Is Sid; best feed, Is 7id to Is 8d; inferior and medium, Is bd to Is 7d per bushel (sacks extra). Wheat.—None offered. Nominal quotations are • Prime velvet and Tuscan, clean and fit for seed, 4s to 4s 3s; piime milling, 3s lOd to 4s ; medium milling, 3s 7d to 3s t’d; fowl feed, 3s 5d to 3s 7d per bushel (sacks in). Barley.—Only feed and milling quality offered, which realised Is lid to 2s 4d per bushel (sacks Potatoes.—Market over-supplied and sales difficult to effect. Best Derwents, £1 7s 6d to £1 10s; medium, £1 2s Cd to £1 5s per ton (bags extra). , , , Chaff. - Not quite so plentiful, and prices slightly firmer. Best oaten sheaf, £3 to £3 2s 6d ; medium, £2lss to £2 17s 6d : inferior, £2 5s to £2los per ton (bags extra). , , r Turnips (bagged), none to hand; do (loose), 15s to 17s per ton.
The Mutual Agency Company of New Zealand, Limited, report that prices ruled as under at their auction sale to-day:—
Oats are still offering too freely, with the result that buyers are less eager to do business, and prices show a decline" of about id on last week s prices. Prime milling, Is 8d to Is BJd ; prime feedj Is 7d to Is 8d; long Tartars, 1s 10jd ; crushed, Wheat.—Only a few odd lots offering ; prices show no change. Red sorts, 3s lOd; fowl feed, 3s 7d. , . Barley.-There is no more disposition on the part of buyers to do business, but prices do not improve. Good, 2s 4Jd to 2s 6d (ex truck); inferior and feed, Is 6d to 2s. . Potatoes.—Buyers only, purchase sufficient to keep business moving. Prices show a decline of 5s to 10s. Good, 27s 6d ; Northern are worth a tew shillings more. Carrots, 37s 6d per ton. . Chaff.—Buyers being more disposed to do business, prices show a slight advance. Best, 62s to 645; medium to good, 55s to 60s ; straw chaff, 40s to 595. MINING NOTES.
Auckland, August S.— Sales today: Alburuia 4s 3d, May Queen 9s, Moanatairi 7s, Monowai 3s 2d, Wailii Silverton 455, Waitekauri 575, Alpha 5s lid, Grace Darling 3s, Kauai Vermont 5s Hd to 6s, Fluke 8s b’d, Bunker Hill 4a 3d. Buyers: Talisman 12s 3d, Woodstock 30s. Mr Reeves reports a return from the Enterprise dredge, Alexandra, of 320z Bdvvt Ogr of gold for the week ended 3rd inst.-136 hours’ dredging time. The Reefton gold returns for the week are:— Progress, 14Ioz amalgam from 220 tons; Keep-it-Dark, 78oz amalgam from 81 tons; Hercules* 90oz amalgam from 80 tons ; and the Cocksparrow Dredge, 19oz amalgam from 80 tons. Mr Thomas Callender reports the receipt of 60oz lOdwt 9gr of retorted gold from the Sew Hoy Big Beach Gold Mining Company.
