STEAMSHIP CONTRACTS

WHITE SAILORS OR BLACK?

[Visa Press Association.]

MELBOURNE, August 3.

In the Assembly the Labor members raised tho question of the new producocxport contracts, and urged that the Government should not entertain the tender of the P. and 0. Company while they continued to employ cheap black labor. The farmers are opposed to having the produce carried by blacks to the exclusion of whites. The Premier has promised to give the matter careful attention before tenders are accepted. Later.

The Government arc advised by the Agent-General that no tenders have been received in London for the new frozen produce export |contracts ; nor have any been received in Melbourne. The reason given is that a weekly service is required in the summer months, and that the P. and O. and Orient Companies, the only ones which can furnish this, consider the conditions in the contract unsatisfactory. They have mitten .to .tie Premier statiug the terms they are willing to agree to, and h6 is considering the matter. Lund's Aberdeen line can only furnieh a forttightly service.
