For the second time the battle of affiliation was decided by the votes of the Committee of the O.R.F.tj. Cholera is reported to be prevalent in Kieff and Padolia.
Roberts, the billiard champion, made a break of 1,392 in Slmio. The New South Wales Parliament will probably be prorogued with the view of a dissolution before the end of the month.
Persistent rumors are current that Sir W. Vernon Harcourt resigns his official position in the Imperial Cabinet at the end of the session. In his denial Sir W. V. Harcourt is very guarded. The profits of the London Chartered Bank of Australia at the end of 1893 were £5,986. The bank pays a dividend on preference shares, but none on ordinary shares, and carries forward £2,082. The directors state that the securities have been stringently revalued, and that losses and depreciations have been provided for out of the contingency fund, of which the balance amply provides against any further loss. Hubner, an Englishman, claims to have invented a bullet-proof dress superior to that of Dowe. He intends to present the patent rights to the War Office free of any charge. The French President has signed a decree to establish a Minister for the Colonies.
It is understood that the report of the Commission who inquired into the charges brought by Mr Charlton, ex-veterinary surgeon, against several Government officials will be adverse to the complainant. The charges were found to be nothing more than hearsay. In the hearing of a case connected with the Wellington Industrial and Provident Co-operative Society, now in liquidation, the magistrate said the dividends appeared to have been paid out of capital, and the system of bookkeeping was the most unique within his experience. Tbo services of Mr Kinsella, committee reporter for the Legislative Council, have been dispensed with.
