MELBOURNE, May 7. It is estimated that tho railway returns for the year will show a deficit of £380,000, despite the reduction of the expenditure by £214,000. It is also understood that tho Government programme for submission to Parliament next session will contain proposals to reduce the railway freights on agricultural produce ; also for a reduction of the present prohibitive Customs duties, based on the report of the Tariff Committee ; and for the abolition of the stock tax, except on cattle. HOBART, May 7. A discovery has been made that certain shellfish in the Derwent arc prolific in pearls. Fifteen hundred gems wore gathered from this source by one person in three hours.
