The Hod. R, J. Seddon 1s expected to return to Dunedin from the South to-morrow morning, He speaks at Milton to-night. The premises in Princes street known as the Queen’s Theatre have been leased for ten years for auction purposes by Lorie and Co., who intend spending L 1,200 on their conversion,
The prizes in connection with the Otago Anglers’ Association, which will be presented at the Coffee Palace this evening, can be seen in the window of Mr J. Mendelsohn, tobacconist, Princes street. Owing to the state of his health Mr P, Baldwin, a son of Captain Baldwin, of Wellington, was obliged to decline before leaving England the proffered appointment of equity draughtsman to the Loudon Charity Commissioners, commencing at a salary of LSOO a year. Another city landmark has disappeared, the premises in High street recently occupied by Mr £. C. Reynolds as an auction mart and the adjoining offices being in process of demolition. A substantial warehouse is to be built on tho site for Messrs Ross and Glendining. The Rev. Dr Lucas delivered a lecture at the City Hall last night on 'The Indian Tribes of Canada.’ There was a good attendance on the occasion. The lecturer gave a very instructive account of the language and customs of the people, pointing out that, owing to every tribe speaking a different tongue, missionaries had considerable difficulty in spreading the gospel among them. Referring to the carvings of the Indians, be said that if many of the Indian carvers in stone were taken to Italy and ’rmperly trained, they would make as good :.>rs as any of the Italian artjsts of old. He also spoke of the wit of the Indians, giving numerous instances of their possession of that faculty, and touched on many other points in the life of these Interesting " red people.” The lecture as a whole was moat acceptable, and the audience were not slow In showing their appreciation of lb To-night a united meeting will be held, when Dr Lucas and Mr B. The proposal for the conservation Ocean Beaoh sandhills and the restoration of the sea-wall at St. Glair was discussed last night at a conference of municipal representatives, and resolutions for the carrying out of the scheme were adopted, la the coarse of his later remarks Mr Fish said that Dunedin’s contribution to the dost would be 3$ of the whole. At the inquest this afternoon on the body of the young man Filewood, Dr Ooughtrey drew attention bo an important faot, and one that cannot be too widely known. He said that it was a mistake to measure medicine by the spoonful, as tablespoons, dessertspoons, and teaspoons were to bo found ivhich differed in their respective sizes, and, handling a tablespoon which was before him, ho said that that spoon would hold what would equal not one dose, but a dose and a half. Messrs Stone, and Son have sent us the annual report of the Journal of the New Zealand Institute of Surveyors, which Is now edited by Chief Surveyor Adams, and is in its second year of publication The Queensland Post Office Directory and the Post Office Aberdeen Directory have just been added to the list of directories which may be referred to free of charge at Messrs Stone, Son, and Co.’s publishing office, Crawford street. At a meeting of the Committee of the Dunedin Poultry Society last evening, Mr Carlton in the chair, the treasurer reported that 120 special prizes (including eight silver caps) had been promised for the next show. Messrs Miller and M’Keich were appointed to fill up tho vacancies on the Committee. It was d-fi-nitely resolved that tho show be held on June 30 and July 1 and 2.
The annual cession of the Port Chalmers Literary and Debating Society was commenced jesterday evening in the Seamen’s Rest The chairman (Mr A. Thornton) delivered an inaugural address, and Mr W. M'Kiunon read a paper on * Lyric Poetry.’ Vocal illustrations v/ere rendered by Mrs Downes, the Misses De Longueville Graham. Kelly, Thomson, and Mr D. K. L. Walker. The present membership of the society is fifty seven.
