CRIMINAL STATISTICS.

The Dunedin statistics for the quarter euded March 31 show that 421 cases were dealt with. Forty-two offenders were discharged for want of evidence, twenty-one were committed for trial, 290 were summarily oonvioted, sixty-one were convicted and discharged, and«twenty-six of the cases were dismissed on the merits. There were 145 charges of drunkenness against ninetyone men and fifty-four women, and all the offenders were con Wet d with the exception of one woman, who died before her case was dealt with. There were twenty more cases of drunkenness thi* quarter than there were in tho preceding quarter. For vagrancy, obscenity, etc, eighteen males and fourteen females w re brought before the OourS, thirteen males and twelve females being convicted. There were eight males and six females charged with lunacy, all but three of the females bsiog committed to asylum 3. Twenty-nine males and five females were charged with assault, breach of the peace, etc., seventeen males and fonr females being convicted. For damaging property charges were brought agitinst six males and three females, the rtsult beiog that two males and three females were cod vie ed. Larceny, housebreaking, etc., claimed nineteen males and eleven females, ten males and seven females being convicted, while two of the males, were committed for trial. For breaches of by-laws there were sixty-six males and two females charged, fifty-seven of the males and both the females balng convicted; and for breaches of the Impounding Act tweity-one males and three females were charged, convictions being rccoid;d in all the cases, tight male chi dren and ten female children were committed under the Industrial Bchools Act. Twelve maleß were charged under the Destitute Persona Act, orders being made in respeot of three < Renders. The revenue for the quarter amounted to LlO5 12s 6d, showing an increase of L 35 over the receipts for the corresponding quarter latt year. The total nnmber of oases dealt with in that quarter was 414.
