News from Samoa per Wainui states that Mataafa, being now satisfied that he cannot obtaia the kingship, is trying to get Malietoa to give him an important place in the Government, but Malietoa insists on an unconditional surrender. The quarrel between the Chief Justioe and the Land Commission continues, INVERCARGILL, Mabch 8. At tho Land Board to day Mr J. B. Basstian appeared to answer the allegation of Ranger Campbell that he was aoting as a dummy in connection with 1,400 acres of land he took up at Centre Hill on perpetual lease. He admitted that he did not reside on the land, but said tbo improvements, which the ranger valued at L2O, coßt him Ll2O. The Chief Commissioner stated that the Act required L3GO worth of improvements from the licensee by July next if he resided on the land, and double that amount if not, so on Bapstian's own showing he was far behind. The licensee said he did not know so muoh was required. He affirmed that he took up the land solely for his own benefit. The Board resolved to hold a special inquiry en the 18th insr.
