ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.

Alfred Selby, drowned at Lumsden, was a pupil of the Normal School, Dunedin, and had just gained a scholarship. At the inquest the verdict of the jury was" Accidentally drowned.” A boy of nine years, named George Lipsey, while boating on the Waitou River, Te Aroha, fell into the water aud was drowned.

Peter Pownall, of West Clive (Hawke’s Bay), committed suicide by. hanging this morning, The name of the seaman who fell over board the Manapouri yesterday afternoon, while the vessel was off Ravenabourne, was Alexander M*Donald, a single man, aboat forty-five years of age. A search was made last night and again this morning for the body by Constables Boddam and Gleeson, but at a late hour this afternoon they had not succeeded in recovering it. No one saw the man fall overboard, but a lady passenger heard a splash, and at once spoke about the iputter to Quartermaster P. M'Donald, who gave the alarm* Everything possible was done to save the unfortunate lifebuoys wore thrown overboard, the engines stopped, and a boat lowered with the chief officer and five men in the short space of one minute and a-balf. The man was seen swimming towards the vessel against the strong (food t}de, but he sank before the boat reached him. The lifebuoys were picked up, and close to one of them was the unfortunate man’s cap. The boat remained for some time near the spot, but nothing could be seen of him. Several persons were engaged in dragging the Victoria channel this morning in search of the body of M'Donald.
