ALBANY STREET SCHOOL COMMMITTEE.

The ordinary meeting of the Albany street School Committee took place last evening in the Bohoolhouse. There wero present— Messrs Baroett (chairman), J. Allen, Mattland, P. Fredric, and Shepherd, An apology for non-attendance was received from Mr Toomey. A letter-was received from the secretary of the Public Schools' Swimming Club asking for the appointment of a delegate from the School Committee.—Mr J. Allen was appointed delegate. Circulars were received from H. Clark (Milton) and A. M'Kerrow (Hampden), intimating that they were candidates for vacancies in the Education Board. The names of the Hon. T. Fergus, J. W. Jago, and Isaac Green were mentioned as probable candidates, and it was resolved that consideration of the nomination of candidates should stand over to a special meeting on the 29th inst.

The Secretary of the Education Board forwarded a report of the inquiry re the appointment of Mr Spenoe.—Mr Maitland moved—" That the secretary be instructed to reply to the Star's leader, which censured the Committee for its action in this matter."—Mr Fbedrioseconded the motion, which was carried unanimously, there being present—Messrs Burnett, Maitland, Fredric, and Shepherd.

On the motion of Mr Maitland it was resolved that the question of furnishing the gymnasium be held over till the opening of the school.

ft It was stated that the head-master, Mr Ferguson, was in Fiji, and on the motion of Mr Maitland, leave of absence was granted (if necessary) in the event of his non-arrival in time for the opening of the school. It was resolved that Mr Fredric be authorised to settle the accounts in connection with the joint concert and picnic of the Union and Albany street schools.

Mr Fredbic mentioned that the balance of the pupils of the school in the penny savings bank amounted to L 124 18s lid. The Secretary of the Education Board wrote intimating that the sum of L 23 15s had been paid to the credit of the Committee.—Received. Accofrots amounting to L 5 17s 4d were passed for payment, and it was announced that the Committee start the year with a credit balance of L 8 12s.

Sir,—l have been instructed by the Albany street School Committee to write you stating that the oensure passed in your leader re Spence ir.qn.iiy was qui c uncalled for, and that, had you been rep.-esented at that meeting when Mr Spence was recommended for the appointment, the tenor of your remarks in regard to the Committee would have been of quite an opposite nature.—l am, etc., D. 0.
