NEW ZEALAND ALLIANCE.
Last evening the Rev. Edward Walker, of the New Zealand Alliance, addressed a public meeting at Kaikorai Valley. He discussed the character of the conflicting evidence respecting the effectiveness of Prohibition where enacted, and showed that the bulk of the evidence, from disinterested parties, was overwhelming in its favor; while that supplied by the liquor interest was, as might be expected, only of a discrediting character—but their opposition to it was evidence of its effectiveness in diminishing their sales. He quoted at length evidences of the improved attitude of the churches everywhere towards the liquor traffic, especially as illustrated by the utterances of public men at the recent International Congregational Council in London, including the) Rev. Dr Parker, of the City Temple, London, and of the Rev. Dr Roseby, of Sydney, and formerly of Dunedin. A hearty vote of thanks was given to Mr Walker, and it was Intimated that probably another meeting would be held in the Kaikorai Valley next week, when Sir William Fox would also speak.
