As there was dissatisfaction on the part of Mr T. W. Hungerford, the "owner of Wakawatea, at the manner in which that horpe was ridden in the Musket Stakes, in which he was beaten by North Atlantio, an application wai made by Mr Hungerford that the stewards of the Auckland Racing Club should hold an inquiry on the subject. A similar request waa : preferred by Gallagher, the jockey who rode Wakawatea. Accordingly the stewards met today, and hoard the evidence of Messrs Hungerford, Smith (the trainer of Wakawatea), Gallagher, and two other witnesses. It was admitted by Gallagher that he did not ride as he was instruotei to .dp, for the reason that he was not strong enorigfo to hold the horse back in third place when Wakawatea got away first at the start of the race, but that in the straight, when he began to use the whip, the oolt did not respond, and was beaten by North Atlantic. Eventually the stewards passed the following resolution:—"That, after hearing the evidepoe of Mr Hungerford, his trailer, the jockey, end witnesses, the stewards are satisfied that Gallagher did not rjdfl to orders in the Musket Stakes, and censure him for not doing so j and that Mr Hungerford is free from all Warne of any nature whatever." Mr Hungerford has offered to run Wakawatea against North Atlantic for a stake equal in amount to that given for the race.
