Northeast Vallet.— The ordinary meet, ing of this Council, held ou Friday, was attended by the Mayor (Mr S. Myers) Crs 'Brinsley, Black, Bussell, Duncan, Green, M‘Gregor, and Anderson.—The Finance Committee reported that the sum of 1425 9s 9d had been lodged in the bank since last meeting. The overdraft of the general account stood at L 1,392 12a Id. Adopted. —The Secretary to the Treasury wrote as follows : “ In reply to letter of the 6ch inst., in which the clerk of the North-east Talley Borough Council stated that that body proposes applying for a loan under the Government Loans to Local Bodies Act, 1886, for the purpose of erecting municipal buildings, in conjunction with a police station, telephone bureau, and telegraph office, I am directed to inform you that loans are made under the said Act only for public works, and as the buildings yonr Council propose to erect are not public works within the meaning of the Act no loans can be made under the Act for their erection. Received. —The Mayor stated that Mr Taylor, town clerk, had waited npon him Preference to the Local Audit Bill, and bad nrged that the North-east Valley Council should advise the member for the district to vote against the Bill. Accordingly the Bill was considered at a committee meeting, and, after it had been fully considered, it was resolved to seud the following telegram to the member for the district:—“ Committee of the Northeast Valley Council strongly recommend yon to oppose Local Audit Bill, as seriously altering municipal financial arrangements, with probable increase of taxation to many boroughs." A reply as follows was received:—“ Shall oppose Local Audit Bill. After having been revised in Committee will be sent to local bodies for consideration. Has not the slightest chance of passing in its present form.— \V . Dawson.”
