HAWKERS’ LICENSES.

Sik,—The recent action of the Roslyn Town Council in the matter of license fees for the butchers' hawking carts may fairly be designated as Protection run mad, and leads one to suppose that among the members of thit assembly there lurks a budding M'Kinlay, of American tariff tame. It appears that the license fee for these carte has till quite lately been L2 per year, but a few weeks ago the Council, in their seal to •'protect local industry," raised the fee to LlO ! A modest bound thiß, truly. Now, in the remoter parts of Roslyn, Kaikorai Valley, etc., these carts have been a great I boon and convenience to housewives, and j they naturally feel indignant at the prospect i of their being stopped, which tbey assuredly will be after the decision at the Police Court I on Saturday, when a young man was fined 1 12s 6d and costs for hawking without a license. i The vagaries of these twopence-ha'penny {town councils which, " thick as leaves in \ Vallombrosa," infest the suburbs of Dun- • edin, are often ridiculous, often unjust, and are the inevitable result of " dressing in a littlo brief authority" men often unfit for it.
