CITY POLICE COURT.

Saturday, June 27. (Before Mr R. Wilson, J.P.) Drtjnkknness.— Margaret Mooney, who appeared for the fourth time, was fined ss, in default twenty-four hours in gaol. Chimney on Fire.—For this offence William Mill*, of High Btreet, was fined 2s 6d, without costs. Foul Language.— Jessie Harvty alias M'Ewen was charged with making use of indecent language within the hearing of people in Leith avenue. —Mr Meatyard appeared for accused, and pleaded not guilty. Sergeant Brown deposed to hearing the language complained of. It was made use of in the house about 3.50 am. on the 21st inst., and could be heard from the street. He entered the house, and found accused, another woman, and a man there, and accused had been making use of bad language to the man, whose name was Price. The other woman was speechlessly drunk, and it oould not have been her who used the language. Witness recognised the voice, and went there from complaints made as to the disturbance. —Constable M'Allan gave corroborative evidence.—For the defence, Mrs M'Lauohlan {sister to accused) was called, and said she was prepared to take accused home with her, and not allow her to come into town again—The Sergeant-major of police having recited the previous convictions, numbering fourteen, the Bench sentenced accused to one month in gaol. Charles Price was then similarly charged. Mr Hanlon appeared for accused, and said that he (accused) was under the influence of drink at the time, and could not say whether he had used the language or not,—Evidence was given by Sergeant Brown as to hearing the words in the information.—Mr Hanlon having addressed the Bench, His Worship said there was no doubt but; that accused had used the language, and he could not see his way to dismiss the case. Tho same thing applied to accused as applied to the woman, and he would be sentenced to one month's imprisonment.
