THE UNEIPLOYED.
Messrs D. Pinkerton fend W. Hutchison, M.H.R.S, interviewed the district engineer this afternoon respecting the further work to be provided for the unemployed on the Gatlins line. From Mr Ussber we learn that, as the work—the formation of another mile of the line—has yet to be laid out, and as the weather may fairly be expected to be somewhat broken for a few weeks to come, it will be folly a month before the employment be given. The work to be done is similar to that already in hand, consisting of bash-felling, clearing, and grabbing, prior to the cnttings being made and the embankments formed. Probably fifty or silty men will be taken on, and they will be paid at schedule rates. There are sixty - four on the work now being prosecuted. Mr A. Fraser, inspector of works for the department, is in charge, and will also have supervision of the portion abont to be opened.
