WORK AND WAGES.

[By Eleotbio Telegraph.—Copyright] [Per Press Association.] NEW YORK, April 29. (Received April SO, 1891, at 11 a.m.) There are signs of the strike at Scotdale collapsing, The movement for a general strike for eight hours has been postponed. A Queensland squatter on a visit to Auckland writes to the 'Herald':—"ln my opinion the main cause of the present strike was the introduction of the shearing machine. I recollect years ago the same feeling existed at the introduction of the weaving looms in England. There was a course of riots and destruction of machinery. The shearers feel their occupation is in jeopardy, and their present proceedings will hasten the cessation of hand shearing altogether." The millers at Manningham (England) have gone out on strike, The Auckland Bootmakers' Union have received remittances of LIOO from Wellington, LIOB from Christchurch, and LB2 from Dunedin in aid of the strikers.
