FIRES.
About threeo'olook yesterday morning afire broke out in a double two-roomed cottage in Chalmers place. The fUnm originated in that portion of the house occupied by Alexandrine Ferrier, and « only a wooden partition separated it from the other portion they quickly spread to it, but before they got further the Brigade and the Salvage Corps had them under oontrol, and very soon the place waa gutted. The occupier states that she can in no way account for the outbreak. There was no fire left in the Elace when she went out at 9 p.m., but just efore leaving, she says, she lit a match to enable her to find something, and afterwards threw it down. The adjoining house was occupied by Mr John Whiteiy and some others, who all escaped safely. The furniture in the houses was of little value, and was not insured. A telegram received by the police yesterday states that a two-roomed wooden house and furniture, valued at LSO, situate at Waikaia, was destroyed by fire on Friday afternoon.
