SUDDEN DEATH.
Mr Samuel Porter, who has been for fifteen years the licensee of the Britannia Hotel, in Rattray street, died very suddenly yesterday. He was going about the premises at noon in his usual good spirits, whenhe was seized with an apoplectic fit, which showed such alarming symptoms that Dr A. J. Fergusson was at once sent fori He arrived promptly, and at once pronounced the case to be a serious one. The patient recovered somewhat, but at a quarter to one he was seized with another fit, whioh he did not survive. Mr Porter was sixty-four years of age. « The deceased gentleman was born in Armagh, Ireland, in 1827. He was in the police force there for a number of years, and on his arrival in Otago in 1863 he was engaged in a similar capacity. He held this position until 1871, when he was compelled to retire owing to an injury he received while in charge of the Waikouaiti district. The deceased was always of a genial disposition, and was highly respected by his large circle of friends.
