Port Chalmers.—At hwt night's meeting of the Port Chalmers Borough Council the Lighting Committee reported its acceptance of the Port Chalmers Gas Company's tender for lighting gas lamps at 13s 4d per lamp monthly, and kerosene lamps at 12s 4d per month ; the period of lighting to extend from April 1 until September 1. The report was adopted.—The Works Committee reported that the inspector and staff had been employed forming an asphalt footpath on the south side of Daly street, clearing channels from WicWiffe terrace to Hai rington street, attending to street channels, etc. —The general, special, and water rates for the year 1891-92 were struok in accordance with notice of motion.—A discussion took place in reference to the action of the mayor in wishing to obtain the services of the Crown prisoners in order to repair the road round the Peninsula. Cr Graham strongly objected to this, but the Council decided that it should be carried out. St. Kilda.—At this Council's meeting last evening the Property Tax Commissioner wrote that he had sent on to the Treasury a voucher for the payment of L7l 12s 6d, being advance of Bubsidy due to the St. Kilda Council for the year 1890 91. It was resolved to consider the matter at next meeting, the opinion being expressed that the amount was too small.—Dr De Zouche wrote notifying a case of typhoid fever in Cutten street. The inspector intimated that the house was isolated and kept in a clean state.—lt was resolved to call the attention of the police authorities to the practice in vogue of galloping horses along the Queen's Drive on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. South Dunbdin.—On the Council meeting last night it was resolved, on the motion of Cr Fisher—" That this Counoil place on record its deep .regret for the death of Cr Coesens, and that a letter of condolence be Bent to his widow and orphans sympathising with them in their sad bereavement,"—ln reply to a question, the Mayor stated that the Council's overdraft above the legal limit was about 1300.—0n the question of striking a general rate coming up for discussion, Cr Chetwin said that he estimated that after paying salaries, etc., there would only be LlB7 13s available out of the borough funds for the maintenance of the streets during the ensuing year, and about a third of that would have to be paid for wages. He therefore did not see now it would be possible to reduce the overdraft. The Mayor said the question was one which ought to have been considered at the end of last financial year. The estimated expenditure for next year was L 2.249, and the revenue would only be L 2.104 3s, leaving a deficiency of L 145, and without providing a single penny for the maintenance of the streets in the borough daring the whole of the year. After some farther discussion it was resolved that a general rate of Is 3d in the £ be struok for the ensuing year.—lt was also deoided that the water rate be 5 per cent, on the rateable value of the property in the borough; the separate rate 3d in the £; and that all unoccupied sections assessed under Ll2 10s be charged 5s per annum.—The Mayor and Crs Chetwin and Fisher were authorised to sign the rate book.
