THE SUTHERLAND FALLS.
Colonel Hume has returned to Wellington by the Hinemoa, after having superintended the initiation of the arrangements for the construction by prison labor of roads between Milford Sound and the Lakes countiy. Though it rained very heavily for two days after the arrival of the prisoners at Milford they worked well and contentedly in the erection of their quarters, the huts being ready for occupation within forty-eight hours after the men's arrival. The prisoners were at once started to construct the road along the west side of Lake Ada to the Sutherland Falls, and it will be continued to Te Anau, whence it will be taken by way of Eglinton to the Greenstone, it being intended to ultimately connect Lakes Te Anau and Wakatipu with Milford. So far as present surveys go, it has been found impossible to carry the road by way of the Cleddau ; but further explorations are to be pushed forward by Mr Simpson to determine whether or not this will be practicable. Mr Ross's porty report that they are making good progress with the surveys from the Western Lakes towards the Sounds.
