BRIEF MENTION.
Mr M. Fraer was to-day elected Mayor of Lawrence without opposition. The amalgamated borough of Gore is divided into three wards. Auckland will continue to be the terminus of the San Francisco steamers.
Ex-Attorney-General Wrixon contends before the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council that the Supremo Court of Victoria ought to have declined to inquire into the authority of tho Colonial Government to refuse the Chinese poll-tax. On dit that the Castor and Pollux of local politics quarrelled the other evening over that “speech.” The Baptist Union by 19 to 5 declared in favor of the Bible being road in the State schools.
Eleven seamen of the American ship Leading Wind were sent to Lyttelton gaol this morning for refusal of duty.
At Melbourne a thousand wharf laborers will return to work on Monday on employers’ terms.
