Mr Fish intimated that he and Mr Pinkerton had arranged to contest the election together so far as committee rooms, etc., were concerned, Mr Hutchison having previously engaged a committee room would not be associated with his committee, but it would be understood they were all working together to secure the return of the labor candidates. Four gentlemen were appointed as chairmen of ward committees. Messrs Fish, Pinkerton, and Hutchison briefly addressed the meeting, which was most enthusiastic throughout, and closed with a determination, expressed by resolution, to support the labor party. The Colonial Secretary, speaking at Hastings, said that he was as staunch a Freetrader as ever, and if the Ministry proposed new protective duties he would leave them. He expressed regret that the primage duty, which violated no principle of Freetrade, had not been retained, and a corresponding amount taken off the duties on the necessaries of life. He spoke strongly on the question of defence, contending that unless more encouragement was given to volunteering, the large amount expended on forts, intricate guns, and mines would be simply thrown away, because there were not men enough to man them. Ho is in favor of female suffrage.
