DEATH OF AN OLD COLONIST.

Mr John Hayhurst, sen,, of Green Hayes, one of the most influential residents in the Temuka district, died rather suddenly on Friday morning. He had only been confined to his bed for two or three days. He was in the sixty-second year of his age. He arrived at Lyttelton some time in the early part of 1850, with little capital, but a large amount of energy. Shortly after his arrival ho took some small road contracts under the Canterbury Provincial Government, and in 1860 became manager of Tancred's station, iu South Canterbury district. Shortly afterwards tho deceased leased the station, and carried on sheep-farming with a large degree of success. After resigning tho lease? of Tanored's station, Mr llayhurßt bought Gray's Hill station in tho Mackenzie Country, and afterwards Simon's Pass run, and Blue ClifFs. All this while tho deceased was busily engaged, with an eye to tho future, in purchasing land in and around Temuka district, until at tho time of his death he was the possessor of between 8.000 and 10,000 acres of freehold land. For eoveral years he was a most useful member of the Canterbury Provincial Council, and also served tho ratepayers on nearly all tho local bodies. Of late years he had taken little or no actual part in public matters, but his loss will bo nono the less felt on this account, as it removes one of tho old landmarks from tho early history of Canterbury province. The deceased started tho first flour mill in Tomuka at Milford, and quite recently erected another mill about two miles from Temuka. His eon, Mr J. T. M. Hayhurst, is a well-known flour mill owner at Temuka, and is a representative on several local bodies. Mr John Hayhurst, at the time of his sudden death, was making preparations for a trip to England.— ' Timaru Herald.'
