EARTHQUAKE SHOCK.
NAPIER, October 23.
The severest shock' of earthquake experienced for many years was felt at 8.15 to-night. The direction was east to west. So far as ascertained no damage was done. WANGANUI, October 23. A severe shock of earthquake occurred here this evening about 8.16, and lasted about a minute and a half. The wave was from north to south. WELLINGTON, October 23. A .sharp shock of earthquake was felt here about 8.20 this evening. The direction was north to south. Slight tremors preceded the shock. NELSON, October 23. A sharp shock of earthquake was experienced here at 8.20. The direction was north to south. BLENHEIM, October 23. A violent earth tremor was felt at 8.15 this evening. The direction was north to south. Its approach was distinctly felt. It commenced with a smart shock, which lasted about ten seconds, then a few slight tremors, culminating in a shake as severe, though not of such duration, as that which took place six weeks ago, when a portion of the Christchurch Cathedral spire was thrown down. No damage is reported. HOKITIKA, October 23. A smart shock of earthquake was felt this evening at 8.17. The direction was north to south. The duration was forty seconds. No damage is reported. CHRISTCHURCH, October 23. A slight shock of earthquake was felt here at 8.19 p.m. The duration was about four seconds, and the direction apparently east to west. TIMARU, October 23. A slight shock of earthquake was felt here at 8.18 to-night. Though light, the shock was distinctly felt by a great many people. WOODVILLE, October 24. A heavy shock of earthquake was experienced at a quarter past eight o'clock last night. MARTON, .October 24. A pretty heavy shock of earthquake was felt here at twenty minutes past eight o'clock last night. HAWERA, October 24. The earthquake was felt severely here last night, but no damage was done. The direction was west to east. PATEA. October 24. A rather severe shock of earthquake was felt at 8.18 last night, lasting forty-seven seconds. The direction of the wave was east to west.
