THE RINKS.

The final contest for the tug-of-war came oft' at the Palace on Satarday evening. The Highland Rifles, after a tough fight, succeeded in pulling the City Guards' team over the line ; but they in their turn were defeated by the South District Rifles, who were declared the winners.

The arrangements for the carnival to be held to-morrow and Wednesday evenings are receiving every attention at the hands of the management. The building is to be decorated with evergreens and flowers, and illuminated with Chinese lanterns, The rink will be closed to-morrow morning and afternoon for the decorations.

On Saturday the Columbia was well filled all day and at night. To-night the hat carnival takes place, when no doubt the Columbia will be crowded, as this event has been anxiously looked forward to for some time. There will be seen hats from the size of a shilling to many feet in circumference, and the judge's work will be, we should imagine, rather laborious. The carnival will be kept on until ten, after which visitors can don the rollers and skate to their hearts' content. To-morrow night the polo match Dunedin v. Port Chalmers comes off. Although the Port team are strong favorites there and in town, the manager expects the Columbia team to prove victors in this the first game for the championship of Otae;o, Any team in Otago desirous of entering are requested to let the manager know before the 10th of July, To-morrow evening a mile race will bo contested at the Ravensbourne Rink, and on Friday evening there will be a ladies' half-mile race.

The Choral Hall Rink was well patronised on Saturday, Mr H. Cook being in charge.
