Pirates v. Montecillo had an unfortunate ■ termination, as after twenty minutes' play Shepard (Montecillo's captain) broke his leg above the ankle, and the game was stopped. Dr Batchelor, who was on the ground, set the limb, and Shepard was removed to the hospital. As far as the game had proceeded, Montecillo had all the best of it" Much sympathy is fe t for Shepard who has managed to keen Ins team well in , hand. He will probably be laid up for three weeks or a month. ~,„„„ University v. High School at Tahnna Park in a victory for the former by one goal and a try to ml. Mr Lilly white, writing to the hon. treasurer of the 0.R.F.U., from New Plymouth, under date May IG, returns thanks for the kind treatment received during the stay of the team in Dunedin. He says :■- On behalf of tho team, Shrewsbury, and self, I wish to express our sincere thauks for the , very kind and hospitable manner in which you received us and catered for our amusement during our stay in Lunedin. Everything that ' was possible to bo done to give us a hearty wel- i come was carried out, and the two pleasant 1 mitches with Otago will long bo remembered ; by every member of the team. Moie especially ] we hive to thank Dr Couijhtrey, yourself, and , Mr Ross for your continual exertionß. We have , been beaten to-day, but the accounts of the . players are very hard on tho Tcferee, who, they nay, disallowed them two fair tries. The collaring of the Taranaki men was peifect, and to ' this they owe their success, as nearly the whole of tho play took place in or veiy close to their I twenty-five line. . ' Tho idea on our return is to play a combined ] North Island match a« Auckland, and a com biued South Island team at Dunedin, besidts , another game all round against each province.
