FRENCH ANNEXATION OF THE SOCIETY GROUP.
A LIEUTENANT SHOT, The Richmond, at Auckland from Fiji, brings intelligence that the islands of Lain* bourn, lluiane, and Raiatea, in Society group*, were formally annexed by the French Government on the 17th, 18th, and 21st April respectively. No combined resistance was made by the Natives, but whilst ±IU! French warship Deeres was at Huiane a misunderstanding occurred, which resulted in % death of Lieutenant Donot and the wounding of several spamon. A watering party had been sent ashore in charge of Lieutenant Denot, and a shot was fired from the ship as a signal for the men to return, but this was mistaken by the Natives aa a signal for the commencement of hostilities, and they feed upon the party with the result stated. The natter was afterwards explained, and a Native chief next day went on board the Deeres and made siepe cf snbmkufop, expressing regret at the unfortunate mistake and its consequences. It is stated that’tue Natives in these islands are agreeable to the French occupation.
