VOLUNTEER INTELLIGENCE.

It was the intention of the members of the North Dunedin Rifles to have given the late Sergeant A. P. Hunter a military funeral, but, in deference to the wishes of his parents, they have decided not to do so. The deceased was for over ten years a member of the corpc, and was a most enthusiastic volunteer. On his retirement, owing to ill-health, he was elected a life honorary member in consideration of the many services he had rendered the company. The Port Chalmers Naval Artillery held their usual monthly inspection on Friday night; present—Captain Thomson, Lieutenants M'Donald and Godfred, 1 chief petty-officer, 3 first and 2 second-class pettyofficers, 1 drummer, and 42 seamen ; total, 52, The arms and clothing were minutely inspected, and found to be in excellent order. After drill and before dismissing, Captain Thomson read a letter from the commanding officer of H.M.S. Opal, thanking the company for attending the funeral of their lato shipmate; also informing the company that he regretted he could not possibly accept the challenge of the company to shoot a friendly rifle match.

On Saturday afternoon a friendly match was fired on the South District range between teams representing the South District and Caversham Rifles. The conditions were—Six men a-side; ranges, 200,300, and 500 yards; seven shots at each distance. Subjoined are the scores :
