THE SKATING RINK.

Few excuses were made by those whom Mr Donnolly had invited to be present at the opening of the “Palace” skating rink last evening. Every inch of the space surrounding sko-tlng area ■was occupied by eight o’clock, and scores of would-be visitors crowded round the outside of the doors, vainly endeavoring to squeeze in. The interior of the building presented a very pleasing spectacle, the place being well lighted, scrupulously clean, and tastefully decorated ; and the ventilation had been so well attended to that, while there was no lack of fresh air, the place was not at all draughty. Proceedings commenced by the Engineers’ Hand playing a selection ; after which Mr Barron, one of the city councillors, rose ,’and made a short speech. He said that the mayor had asked him to apologise for him, His Worship having found that it would not be possible for him to be present before nine o’clock, at which hour he hoped to be among them. As they knew, Mr Donnolly had kindly issued numerous invitations, and the large number of ladies and gentlemen who had accepted these invitations showed very distinctly that they were willing on this, as on all other occasions, to assist in anything that would assist in the physical development of the people. Mr Gibson would give an exhibition showing what could be done on roller skates, and afterwards the rink would be open to those who chose to avail themselves of a little recreation. Mr Donnolly had told him that the floor was not in just quite as good condition as it would be in a little time, when it would be got into really proper order. As Mr Donnolly had done so much to inaugurate a new system of things in connection with skating, he would ask on his behalf that the public should show appreciation of his endeavors to provide for them a means of healthful and good amusement. After Mr Gibson's performance the rink would bo open for anyone who chose to put on the skates and see whether they could stand on them or not, and, if they could not stand, to show how gracefully they could sit down.—(Laughter and applause.) He had formally to declare the rink open, and would express the hope that it would be a long time indeed and that our children’s children would be gone before it was closed.

Mr A. Gibson then executed a. series of feats showing what is possible to be done in the way of fancy skating. His gyrations and slides were performed most gracefully in time to music, and the audience freely applauded what was undoubtedly a most instructive and pleasing exhibition of skill. On Mr Gibson’s retirement a few of the visitors ventured out on the rollers, and no accident occurring other amateurs quickly followed ; so that before the rink had been open many minutes it was well occupied. The affair passed off in a most successful manner, the managerial arrangements being singularly complete. The rink will be open daily from 10 a.m. till noon, for ladies only, admission and tuition being free ; and from 2.30 to 5, and 7.30 till" 10 p.m., for ladies and gentlemen, as advertised.
