THE POLICE.
WELLINGTON, March 12 The following changes in the Police Department are about to be made :-V\ angamu and New Plymouth districts are to be amalgamated, Inspector Partly taklug charge of both of them. Inspector James, who has charge of the present \\ angamu district, retires from the service. \\ ailcato and Tauranga districts are to be amalgamated, and will be under the control of Inspector Goodall. Inspector Kiely, of the Waikato district, will proceed to Napier and take charge of the Hawkes Bay district from Inspector Bullen, who retires on compensation,
Our Christchurch correspondent telegraphs :—" An order has been issued to the effect that societies requiring police to assist them at shows, entertainments, or races are in future to guarantee the expenses of the men, and, if mounted, of their horses. No doubt this will do away with many requisitions which are made for services of the police. Frequently four or Bix members of the force are on duty at a quiet, orderly sports meeting keeping back the spectators, which could be as well managed by the committee in charge of the games. It is by no means intended to withdraw police from these places, but the officer in charge will use his discretion in sending out men sufficient to keep the peace and detect criminals."
