Nominations for the seats rendered vacant by the resignation of Messrs Arthur C. Cohen and Charles C. Lacaita, for the constituencies of Southwark and Dundee respectively, have been received. For Southwark Mr Augustus Beddall (Conservative), who was defeated by Mr Cohen at the last election, and Mr Couston (a supporter of Mr Gladstone), were nominated; and tor Dundee General SigM, D. Daly (Unionist) and Mr Firth (Gladjbmite) were proposed. The creditors T in the estate of Lord Augustus Loftus have accepted his oiler ot L 2.000 cash. The bankruptcy will now be annulled. v . . , The latest bulletins publufted give a, less hopeful account of the Condition of the Crown Prince. A derrick, which was being used in raising the girders for the elevated railway in course of construction in Brooklyn street, New York, overbalanced and_ fell on a crowded tram-car which was passing. Three of the passengers were killed, and seventeen badly injured, some so much that fatal results are feared. The cause of the accident is attributed to carelessness of the engineer in charge of the works. Lord Brassey in his lecture at the Colonial Institute advocated the creation of a body with Imperial functions, and which would include colonial representatives. He also referred to the munificent gifts which had been made to South Australia by Sir William Hughes, Sir Thomas Elder, and Mr J. H. The'announcementthatMr F. H. Co wen had been appointed musical director at the Melbourne Centennial Exhibition is premature, nothing yet having been definitely decided on. The British Commissioners are at present negotiating with Herr Strauss, the well-known musician, and until the result is known no definite appointment will be made. Pig iron has fallen, and is quoted at 32s 9d. Two Australian wheat cargoes, comprising 3,500 quarters, have been sold at 30s 9d. Two thousand quarters, in iron bottoms, have been sold for prompt shipment at 38s 9d.

'Frozen meat, at last quotations. The Navy estimates include the sum of L 450.000 as an instalment towards providing an auxiliary squadron. The Agents-General have promised to cooperate with the Emigrants' Aid Society in furnishing official information to inteneiing emigrants to the colonies. It is considered improbable that England and France will agree to the amendments proposed in the Suez Canal Convention by the Sultan.
Teemer has issued a challenge to row any person in the world over a two-mile course for any sum. A heavy snowstorm has been experienced over the greater portion of Great Britain, and railway traffic has been greatly impeded. The Mayor of Cork has been sentenced to a fortnight's imprisonment for assaulting the police who were engaged in stopping a display arranged by the Nationalists. M. Felix Faure, who was appointed Under-Secretary for the Colonies in M. Tirard's Ministry on January 3, has resigned.
