AUCKLAND, February 17,
The s.s. Richmond arrived from the Islands to-day, Among her passengers are the Rev. Shirley Baker (Premier of Tonga) and family, the Rev. Mr Cooper (Knglish missionary), from Raiatea, and Mr MeueJ (German Consul at Tahiti). A hurricane raged at Raratonga from the 22ud to the 20th January, and much damage was done. From seventy to eighty houses were blown down, and the schooner Atlantic, belonging to Donald and Edenborough, was driven on a reef and became a total wreck. No lives were lost. The insurance on the Atlantic's hull was L4OO, and on the cargo L2OO, in the United. The Vice-King of Raiatea, with the chiefs and nobles of the island, visited Tahiti on the 2'|th January with a request for annexation to France." The General Assembly ratified the request, The Governor of Tahiti received the deputation cordially, and promised to send the request to the French Government. The deputation visited Admiral Duquesue, and received a salute of twenty-one guns,
