FATALITIES.
Murray Eccles Johnston, in the employ of Mr F. IT. Daniels, lost his life at Lake Wakatipu on Thursday while attempting to cross the neck of water at the head of the Lake on a horse. The correspondent of the ‘Southland Times ’ states that apparently the horse rolled over on getting beyond its depth. A number of deceased's friends were on the shore, and a boat pulled off to rescue him, but failed to reach him before he sank. Johnston was a good swimmer, but was burdened with a heavy overcoat. The body has not yet been recovered. From the evidence given at the inquest on David Logue, who was drowned while crossing the Titiroa, it appears that lie had been in Fortrose with O’Brien, and they were crossing the river in a flat-bottomed punt on their way back. The punt commenced to take in water, and Logue, becoming alarmed, caught at O’Brien, causing the boat to upset. Logue caught O Brien in the water, and while struggling he let go his hold, and was not seen afterwards. A verdict of “ Accidental death ” was returned.
