The Trustees of the Benevolent Institution have just completed very necessary precautions, in case of fire, in the shape of a complete water supply. The supply is derived from the Main South road by a Sin main eleven chains in length, and from Alexandra street main by a lia main three chains in length. The hose can be run out from four different places, and these can be connected so that the whole of the building can be covered at one time. A trial was made this afternoon by the Cayersbam Fire Brigade in the'presence of Messrs Solomon, Carroll, and Gourley (trustees), Hardy (architect), Burt (contractor), and Superintendent Robertson (of the City Fire Brigade), and proved thoroughly successful. The whole cost of the work was L7O. The risk in case of fire is now reduced to a minimum. Two of the lengths of hose cover the main and side buildings; the one in the yard covers the women a quarters and the kitchen; and the fourth the Old Men’s Home, the sleeping apartments, and the reading-room. As we nave mentioned, piping can all be brought to 'bear on one point.
