Reaper and Binder Trial.
-♦ The reaper and binder trial held under the auspices of the Morth Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Association tcok place yesterday in Mr John Turnbull’s crop in the racecourse paddock, Six machines were entered as follows: M’Cormick (by Messrs Fleming and Hedley), Hornsby (by Messrs W, Christie and Co.), Buckeye elevator (by Messrs W. Christie apd Co.), Reid and Gray, Wood (by hfr H. Connell), and Howard (by Messrs G, Lintptf and Co.). The Hornsby and Buckeye elevator were unable to compete. The areas to bo operated on were not all equally easy for the machines, and in this respect the Howard was placed at a great disadvantage. A portion of this machine’s allotment was laid, and the growth was rank. After the machines had finished their respective allotments the dynamometer testa were made, with the result that the Reid and Gray, M’Cormick, and Wood were found to be 4|cwt in draught and the Howard scwt. The judges then considered their verdipt, and gave it as follows : Roid and Gray, 100 points .. „ 1 McCormick, 99 points .. .. ..3 Wood, 94 points .. ~ .. 3 Howard, SO points .. .. ..4 The Reid and Gray was awarded the maximum number of points, the M‘Cormick being one behind it for “sheaf.” Mr Chnrch, in making known the decision of the judges, said he had besn requested to say that they were unanimqns in their award. It comes only within the scope of those who have practical knowledge of the working of these machines to be able to form anything like a reliable opinion, and we will therefore say no more than that before the decision was made the majority were of the g pinion that the M'Cormick should have been rat, The judges, however, are men hiving acknowledged ability for the work of judging, and the judging card gives the reasons for their decision. The judges were Messrs D. Borne, J. B. Taylor, George Lawrie, J. Macplurson, and A. Murdoch.— ‘ North Otago Times. >
