Australasia's National Debt.
The Australasian colonies collectively owe the respectable sum of L 153,209,998. New South \Vales heads the list -with L 41,034,249. : New Zealand taking second place with L 37,587,776. The last-named Colony, however, has incurred much of this liability through the Maori War and takiag over the debts of the provincial governments which formerly existed there. Victoria owes L 30,114,203, and Queensland L 20.820.850. South Australia is indebted to the amount of L 18,340,700; Tasmania, L 4,026,720; and Western Australia, L 1,286,000. New, South Wales has increased her indebtedness by L 30,000,000 since 1874. New Zealand! has increased hers L 17,000,000 during the same period, while Victoria has only incurred about L 13,000,000 in the same time. These L 30,000,000 of British money spent in New South Wales do not, of course, cover the money advanced from England to promote pastoral, mining, and other enterprises. Probably thirty million pounds more would not be too high a figure to set 1 down for that. I .. ...vi..s . .i.ift-c i
