HARD TIMES.
to the editor. Sir,—Coming through the Leith Valley on Monday I observed a notice on one of tho bridges something like the following .-—"The beams of this bridge are broken, and it is totally unsafe for dray and vehicle traffic of all sorts. Parties taking across drays, etc., will do so entirely at their own ritk. Ido not find any fault with the notice itself; but surely in a case of the kind those responsible should spend a few coppers on the printer or painter, and get it done in such a way that drivers could see it, instead of writing it on half a sheet of notepap >r. On Monday there were all sorts of vehicles crossing and recrossing, crammed full of women and children, and I don't suppose ono of them observed the humane "stop written across tho half-sheet of note-paper; and then, you sec, they crossed at their own risk.—l am, etc., Footpad. Duncdin, January 5.
