WANGANUI, DmumS The hearing of the petition was resumed thU morning. Walter Morgan swore that Peter Hogg treated witness and several others to drinks on polling day at Torafcina. He did not see Hogg pay for the drinks. Witness was not a voter. In cross-examination he said he was an old acquaintance of Hogg’s. James Hogg, a farmer, gave corroborative evidence as to hearing Peter Hogg address a question to the respondent on the evening of hs meettngat Tnrakina, and to seeing tespott* dent hand Hogg two or three gold Coins. Alfred Barlow, who acted as scrutineer for the respondent at one of the polling booths, said he had received no money from the respon* dent for his services. Be had never shown a pound note, saying that he got it from respondent for his services on election day. A, B. Pjtemont admitted treating sev ral acquaintances in the ordinary way on polling day. He sent a boggy for two or three Voters. Lee, a carpenter, swore that the last witness, Pyretnont, snouted for him and others at MatWelltown during - the hours of polling. Ifl cross-examination he admitted that the solicitors for the petitioner had pa«d witness t.2 up to the present; besides L 3 he had received with the subpoena, Li were paid him this (Monday) morning. He had not told a man named Watson that he would not give evidence for Mr Bryce unless he got the money to-day. A. Miley, a liVary. table keeper, said that he placed cabs at the disposal of Mr Ballance’s Committee for the Waitotaia election, but be was paid nothing and he accepted nothing. Peter Hogg' produced the butt of a chequebook showing that he drew.a cheqne forX2, dated polling day.
