SPORTING INTELLIGENCE.

The concluding event of yesterday's racing at Oamaru resulted as follows: — Mizpah won the Counties Plate; Charlie (30sec) defeated Bdla (20sec) and Rabbiter (scratch) in the Trot; the Waitaki Handicap fell to Tarbut, who paid a dividend of L2O 2s ; and Savoy won the Hurry Scurry. The Brewer won the Cup by a length, and the dividend in that race was Ll2 19a. The unplaced horses were Captain Cook, Trapper, and Marjory Moore. A Press Association telegram gives the following as the betting on the New Zealand Cup :—IOO to 33 against Lochiel, 100 to 30 Maxim, 100 to 25 Nelson, 100 to 15 Sextant and Gipsy King, 100 to 14 Artillery, 100 to 10 Hermitage, 100 to 6 Torrent, Ruby, and Regiua, 100 to 5 Moana, St. Clair, and Cruchfield.

Snapshot is not to be taken up to Christchurch for this meeting. Cotton leaves tomorrow morning with Garibaldi. " Hermit," in the' Weekly Press,' plumps unreservedly for Gipsy King to win the New Zealand Cup. "Senex" says: "Nelson, although more or less lame, has been putting in some capital work lately, and seeing what a warrior he proved himself under a similar weight last year, and under somewhat similar conditions as to soundness, I am inclined to tip him to win the Cup straight out, but shall content myself for the present with prophesying that whatever beats him will win it. Peradventure Gipsy King is the one that will execute that feat, and the other places may be fought out between Lochiel and Hermitage." The ' Canterbury Times' tips Lochiel to win, with Nelson and Gipsy King second and third. There were inquiries to-day for Artillery for the New Zealand Cup, and 4 to I was taken ip small sums.

RICCARTON TRAINING NOTES. Another uninteresting morning's work at Riccarton. Regina and Fair Nell went a mile fast, the Cup mare barely holding her own. Nelson covered two miles at a good pace. Artillery was confined to walking. Hermitage, Sextant, and Gipsy King cantered two miles. Moana did easy work, and St. Clair, who arrived from Dunedin last night, followed. Ruby and Cruchfield each went a mile smartly. Lorraine and Torrent were not out.
