THE MIDLAND RAILWAY.
A BAD HITCH. [From Odb Parliamentary Reporter.] WELLINGTON, October 28. The position of the Midland Railway is a very critical one. It is not intended to make any statement in the House this evening, but important papers and a draft of the new agreement, sent out from England on behalf of the Company, will be laid on the table. The Company now require a guarantee from the Government, but the fatter do not intend to grant it. The company also require a right, in the event of lands failing to realise LI ,250,000, to select other lands outside of the prescribed area, to complete the amount. Under the original agreement mountain tops were included in the lands to be given, but Cthe ompany will not take these. The Government are willing to meet the Company as far as possible, and will allow them to take lands to the specified value wfcbin the prescribed area. The company also wish to take part of, the lands set apart for mining purposes. They say that unless these coneessions are granted it is impossible for them to raise in England the money necessary to carry on the works.
