Sugars of all kinds have advanced 3d to 6d per cwt, owing to the estimated deficit of 125,000 tons in the beet crop. H.M. gunboat Wasp is overdue from Singapore, and it is feared she has foundered in a typhoon. ■■'•'' The Russian Embassy here denies the allegation in the French Press that the young Grand Duke Nicholas had delivered a strong anti-German speech, in which he favored a French alliance. M. Sanstroy, who was charged by M. Rouvier to inquire into the question of sugar taxation, has forwarded his report to the Chamber of Deputies. (Recoived Ootober 12,1887, at I 40 a.m.) A serious difficulty has arisen between the Seamen's Union and the Adelaide Shipping Company. Very probably the outcome of the affair will be a complete strike of the seamen, wharf hands, stokers, and others engaged in the shipping trade.
