SMALLPOX IN LAUNCESTON.

The opinion of the several medical gentlemen seempretty well at one on the nature of the malady. J)r Cotterel considers the patients he ha,s visited to be suffering from a virulent attack of smallpox. Drs Pike, Hallowes, and Gutteridge, all of whom have seen the sufferers, also agree on the matter, but Dr Murphy maintains a different opinion, The remainder of the faculty in Launceston have not seen the patients, and therefore offer no decided opinion in the cases, but' from the description of the symptoms are inclined to agree that it is smallpox. Our Hobart correspondent, on this question,'telegraphed last evening:— " Some of pur medicos are sceptioal as to the outbreak in Lauuoeeton being smallpox. Telegraph,' September 2(1. . A Hobart telegram to the ' Argus,' dated the 27tb September, says i—" Fifteen oases .of smallpox are now reported in all, fourteen at Launceston and one at the Don, many' miles away, the last having been carried from Launoeston. A child named Pearson, one of the first attacked, died last night. The other patients are reported to be doing well. All the patients and suspeoted persons are now isolated at the Mowbray racecourse, and the case at the Don is isolated. Two, fresh cases are reported to-day. Some patients were sent out to the racecourse yesterday, but were brought back, as the workmen refused to continue work if patients were sent whilst they were there." Our Wellington correspondent wires : " A meeting of the Central Board of Health was held to<day to consider the smallpox outbreak at Launceston, but after a lengthy discussion the meeting adjourned without arriving at any deoislon." : ~ ...
