In almost every corner of tee Colony the cry is being raised against the extravagance of the present system which falls with ruinous weight on the overburdened taxpayer. It is plain the country cannot stand it. The burden is altogether out of proportion to our means, and retrenchment, stern and unbending, is now forced upon us. Considering the work to be done, the shortness of each working day, the exemption from work on two days each week, and the number of holidays in the year, surely, considering these circumstances and the circumstances of the Colony, the schoolmasters' salaries aie on a somewhat extravagant scale.
