CHESS.

TO THE EDITOR.

Sib,—The recent match Otago v. Tirnaru shows that the Otago Club has been beaten by o second-class club. I naturally expected that the Otago Club would have been victorious over such a weak oluo as Tirnaru, and I am rather sorry for Us defeat; at the same time it may teach its members a lesson of humility. I rrmoinber when Mr D. R. Hay's chess team was defeated somo timo ago by the Christchurch Club which is the strongest in the Colony—that a member of the Otago Chess Club wrote to your paper stating that a stronger team oould have been selected from among tho members alone. The result of the late match with Tirnaru proveß th t the Otago Club would not have a ghost of a chance of scoring a game against such playois as comprise the Christchurch Club; and I trust in future that none of Its members will disparage the efforts of others in promoting the interests of chsss, even should the players not belong to their dub. „ ... , , I also remember that Mr D R. Hjy, in his reply to the letter alluded to, offered to play anyone in the provlnco a friendly match, but I have not heard of anyone taking up tho gauntlet. It is reasonable to suppose that they are afraid of coming off second best. lam glad to see that a greater Interest is being taken in the noble game, and I trust that many more matches will take place, no matter which side wins, as they alwajß help to keep alive the emulation and enthusiasm of chess players.—l am, etc , A Lover or Chess.
