FIRES.
By tho destruction of a threshing-mill, belonging to Mr P. Henley, the South British Office lose Ll5O. A fire occurred between six and seven o’clock last evening, by which a two-roomed dwelling-house in Calder street, St, Kilda, was destroyed. The house belonged to Mr James Cranston, who is at present absent from the Colony, and it was occupied by a seaman named Peter Filet and his family. Pilet is employed on thes.s. Beautiful Star, which is away from Dunedin just now. Tho tiro is supposed to have originated through the explosion of a kerosene lamp during Mrs Pilet’s temporary absence from the house. On returning and finding the place on lire she became so bewildered that she could made no attempt to save her children, who were in bed at tlie time, but fortunately they wore rescued by some neighbors. The house was insured in the South British Office for L 75, and the furniture in tho Equitable Office for LSO.
