GAOL DISCIPLINE.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—With one exception the writers of the letters on the above subject which have appeared in your columns have omitted to mention the fact that criminals from the working classes only are ever flogged. This is curious, considering that we have the same law for rich and poor alike. Of course members of the upper ten rarely commit brutal outrages on women. They are not such fools—they usually ruin their victims in a more refined manner; but when a man of education and means commits an offence meriting the lash, is he flogged ? Not much. A few years ago, in a northern town, a well-to-do citizen was arrested for a shocking crime, and found guilty before the Resident Magistrato of an indecent assault only, and was let off with the inadequate sentence of six months' imprisonment. Had this man been clad in fustian, in all probability he would almost have been flayed alive. How beautifully tho system works; and yet we pay members of Parliament.—l am, etc., Democrat.
