MR ROSS AT ROSLYN.
TO THE EDITOR. fin,— Having read the speech delivered by Mr A. H. Ross, I am surprised to find no mention of any desire to amend the Harbors Act, so that our ports may be free of any compulsory charge to vessels visiting our port. See what effect our heavy port charge* have on the people in Dunedin and Port Chalmers. Every ocean steamer that passes our port takes L3OO at least past money) that would have been spent here had silo been allowed to entor on liberal terms. I maintain that it would pay the people to admit those ships free of any charge whatever. Mr ' Powell's remark about Mr Ross being born to shine as chairman of the Harbor Board may be true— let us hope it is; btit the Aiattor to me is opacjue. I hive personally noticed in the House Mr Ross's cona'ant and earnest attention to the business before it; but I fail fcd understand his giving a deliberate vote, four times in. succession for a "Bill," and the next session declaring the "Bill" to be a piece of infamous legislation. I wish Mr Ross had said something about reducing the members of the Lower House to fifty
and the Upper House to twenty-five, with not more than four Cabinet Ministers, an l a dci.nmination to get rid uf the - Kadway Department, for none of tl.o-e ruunii.g it now have the will or the ability to place our railways on a proper commercial footing.- ' air, ttc , Thomas It Honiii-:. TO THE EDITOR. Sip.,—Allow me to point out that my question with r.gard to Mr Ross'* absence from a number of divisions was not so indefinite as you put it, and in the interests of fa r play you will, lam sure, give the coriect version. The question was as follows:—"If Mr Ross was the faithful and hard-working member he was said to he, how did he account for his name not appearing in 30 per cent, of the divisions which took place during the session of 1880?" Mr Ross failed to give a satisfactory answer, and I therefore fail to see where he scored the point, as you say he did. —I am, etc , Joseph Powell. LittUbourne, Juue 27.
