SENDING MONEY OUT OF THE COUNTRY.
TO TBS EDITOR. Sib,—Mr W. D. Stewart, at his meeting, is reported,to hare made use of the following argument in support of a Protection policy:— “For example, we sent Home from New Zealand for fruit LBO,OOO. We paid for jams and jellies LII,OOO. We sent Jj7O,QOO out of the country for candles. We paid L 147,000 for coals. 1200,000 was sent but for slop clothing.’' A totd of L 497.000 of money sent from the country in payment of articles of oonsumption we can produce ourselves. ,' Probably Mr Stewart will be surprised to learn that the total amount of specie-rt.c,, money—exported the same year was L 79,597. I would like Mr Stewart to answer the question By what means the remaining balance of L 417,403 was paid for the articles in question ? —I am, etc., A Consumes. Dunedin, March 30.
